It doesn’t matter if you have a one-wheeler, two-wheeler, or even a tricycle – there are some very important bicycle safety rules that every parent and kid should know before heading out on the roads this summer for some outdoor fun!
Believe it or not, bicycling is considered one of the safest forms of transportation. Of course, it’s only safe if the following three safety tips are followed:
*thanks to our friends at KidsHealth.org for this great information
1) Wear a helmet! Wearing a helmet should not be optional. Some parents grew up in a generation where helmets were not “cool”. It’s for this reason that we must stress the importance of wearing a helmet. If you’d like to learn the basics about helmet safety and some additional tips on selecting the proper helmet, visit Kids Health – Bike Safety.
2) Wear safe clothing. Believe it or not, what kids wear while biking is also very important for their safety. As an example, wearing lightweight clothing will help to avoid getting overheated and dehydrated. If you’d like to read more on what kinds of clothing are considered “bike-ready”, check out Safe Clothing for Bikers.
3) Learn the rules of the road. There are only a few to know, but they help to ensure kids and adults are merging and moving safely in a way that signals to everyone else on the road. As an example, when riding in a group, always bike single file on the street. Want to learn all the best tips for bikers? Check out the Rules of the Road.
But once you’ve got your bike safety in check, it’s time to get outside and get biking! There are endless outdoor activities you can take part in that are perfect for those willing to travel to a destination.
