Here’s a question that came in from a camper named Chris:
Is there a sunblock/bug repellent I can use when I’m outdoors this summer?
Thanks so much for your very timely question. With the warm weather upon us and mosquitoes at their peak, people are looking for a way to make it easier to protect themselves from sun rays and mosquitoes by using one “combination product” instead of 2.
However, products that combine sunblock and Deet or other insect repellents should not be used because sunblock will need to be reapplied several times whereas Deet should be applied only once a day. Put your sunblock on first and then wait at least ten minutes before you put your insect repellent on so you get the best results from both products. Most insect repellents don’t usually need to be reapplied after swimming, but be sure to always put more sunblock on after you towel off from your swim!
Always talk to a pharmacist or doctor about choosing the best product for you. The American and Canadian Pediatric Societies also have some great advice on how to protect yourself from mosquitoes and both agree that DEET is NEVER to be used on infants.
