What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity that uses a GPS receiver to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches”, anywhere in the world. There are almost 1.3 million active geocaches published on various websites and there are over 5 million geocachers worldwide. It’s like a global scavenger hunt!

Here’s a short video that explains the game:

The best part is, there are tons of “geocaches” in your area, which will give you and your kids hours of fun on those days when you need a fun outdoor activity.

Here’s a neat example: Back in 2008, Shannon the Sly Fox (pictured here) left Ontario, Canada and has since travelled across the world and now has recently been spotted in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Those in the geocaching community have interacted with the little figurine, and have tracked her entire voyage on Geocaching.com.

Geocaching is a great example of technology getting people outdoors and active. At first, you may be skeptical as to how the whole process works, but rest assured once you plug your first set of GPS coordinates in, you’ll quickly understand how easy and fun it can be.

Andy Camper was one of the early adopters of Geocaching, and has remained a big part of the community. Here’s some additional links that’ll help you get started with your geocaching adventure:
