Ask Ian Questions from Campers – How to build a shelter

Hi AndyCampers,

A camper named Calista wants to know how to make a tent (or shelter) in a forest if you get stranded there with no supplies.

First, a happy camper is a prepared camper! With so much to explore in the great outdoors it’s easy to get distracted on what starts out as a simple stroll. Emergencies happen so it’s always a good idea to pack a few basic supplies with you “just in case”. Always pack extra water, a poncho, blanket and some rope.

If you do get stranded in the woods with no supplies, try looking for natural shelters first like large rocks or the root base of an uprooted tree. These provide a good windbreak. Never wander into caves and stay away from rock faces in lightning storms. Whether you find a natural windbreak or not, you’ll need to build a shelter to keep you safe, dry and warm. By far the best shelter is Andy’s Debris Hut. On the site, you’ll find complete instructions on how to build it without any tools. And everything you need can be found right there in the forest – a pole, some branches, twigs, leaves and needles.

If you ever get stuck in any situation, just use your imagination. You can usually find something around to help you out.
