Kids can be picky eaters! Some kids will usually reach for the sugary treats rather than the healthy snacks that’ll help them grow. Can you blame them? Of course, children need their parents to show them some alternatives to delicious, appetizing snacks. That’s why we’ve compiled the Top 10 Best Healthy Snacks for Kids.
If you’re heading out camping, or to the park this weekend, consider bringing along any of the following snack ideas that we consider “100% Kid-Approved”:
#10 – Popcorn – We’re not talking “movie popcorn” here. We’re talking about good ol’ fashioned “grain and fiber” popcorn. Without the salt and butter, popcorn is considered one of the healthiest snacks you can give your kids. Pop some kernels and stick them in a ziplock. You’ve got yourself a delicious treat that the kids will love!
#9 – Cheese – It’s a great source of calcium for your kid’s growing bones. The best part about slicing up some cheese before heading out, is that cheese goes with everything! If you’re feeling extra ambitious, bring along some crackers to add some carbs to the mix.
#8 – Trail Mix – There is no sense going and buying the store bought brand of trail mix, especially because it’s a fun activity for kids to make their own. Before heading out with the kids, grab some granola, dried fruits, various nuts, unsweetened coconut flakes, peanuts, mini pretzels, pumpkin seeds, hulled sunflower seeds or whatever else you can find in the cupboards and throw them together! (if you’re not too concerned about your children’s sugar levels, you can also spice things up with just a few chocolate chips).
#7 – Lunch Meat Wraps – If your kids aren’t vegetarians, then you’re good to go! Use any form of lunch meats, and roll them up into bit-sized treats. For example, spread some cream cheese on a piece of salami and roll it up! Lay a pickle on some lunch meat and roll it up! The options are almost endless.
#6 – Mini-Pizzas – Everyone loves pizza, especially kids! Save the gourmet pizza for dinner. But when it come to snacking, make your kids a mini-pizza. Grab an english muffin, some tomato sauce, low-fat mozzarella cheese, and whatever else your kids like to have on their pizzas and IT’S AMORE! Kids will really get into the activity of pizza-making.
#5 – Apple Sauce – Rich in vitamins and fiber, applesauce can be a healthy snack and another way to get kids to eat their fruit. Some kids out there may roll their eyes at a mushy substance like apple sauce, so be sure to spice it up by adding a light pinch of cinnamon!
#4 – Fruit Smoothies – Naturally sweet and refreshing, no adult or child can resist the delicious taste of a fruit smoothie. Here a link to a great smoothie recipe: Healthy Fruit Smoothie Recipes.
#3 – Peanut Butter – PB on toast. PB on celery. PB on a playing card. It doesn’t matter – kids love peanut butter! (unless their allergic to nuts, and then please ignore #3). Peanut butter is high in fat, but also packed with fiber and protein. Ants on a log is a popular choice, which includes: celery and peanut butter, sprinkled with raisins – yum!
#2 – Cereal – Some cereals are a great source of fiber. Throw it in a zip-lock and eat it dry. It’s a perfect snack from when you’re on the move. However, be weary of all those sugary cereals. If you’d like a list of some of the healthier cereals on the market, here’s a list.
#1 – Fruit – This is a no brainer. Fruit is delicious, healthy, and your kids are bound to love at least one type of fruit. It’s the first snack you should always reach for!
